Sanusi Debunks Olanihun Ajayi’s Hypothesis With Facts And Figures
By:
Dr. Wumi Akintide

Chief Olanihun Ajayi did a marvelous job by writing his new book and launching it in a big way. He made sure the participants at the Launching were drawn from the cream of the shakers and movers of political and economic power in Nigeria. I commend Chief Ajayi for writing that book. If most of our political operatives would do that for posterity, Nigeria would be better served. The American Democracy which is a far cry from our own brand of “Demoncracy” in Nigeria is made more vibrant, efficient, and helpful because it thrives on freedom of speech and documentation.
Some 16 years ago when I was doing my final dissertation for another Master’s in Human Behavior at the Yeshiva Jewish University of New York, I stumbled on a research paper in the Library, which says that no less than 150,000 books per day are published in America nation-wide. I was stunned but not surprised. That number must have quadrupled by now, if you have the time to double-check it.
Debate and freedom of expression are what makes American Democracy so unique in the whole world. Americans of different shades of opinion and party labels are busy putting their thoughts in writing for generation yet unborn. That is why the reading public in America has created a bestseller list for new publications coming in. Many writers compete to have their books in that list. Serah Paling the running mate to John McCain in the last presidential election has just added a new one that is currently being reviewed by Television stations nation-wide. American writers compete to join that list, and in so doing, they help in a big way to keep the debate going on how well or how badly America is doing and what else can be done to make their union more perfect. It is an amazing country to live in.
One of the main tenets of Chief Ajayi’s new book has ascribed much of the Nigerian woes to the Northerners as a group. The book has done a lot more than that, but the part that interests me in this rejoinder is his central thesis that the Northerners should carry a lion share of the blame and by extension the British imperialists led by Lord Lugard whose wife came up with the word “Nigeria” as the best word to describe the merger or the so-called amalgamation of the North and the Southern protectorates in 1914.
I think it was the same sentiments that have compelled our controversial Governor of the Nigerian Central Bank, Alhaji Sanusi who was one of the guests at the Launching, to make a rejoinder that is so powerful and true that most Nigerians who were privileged to hear it directly from the horse’s mouth, would not forget for a long time. A good friend of mine in Maryland drew my attention to the rejoinder because I have earlier on sent the same friend a copy of one of my articles on Alhaji Sanusi in which I urged Nigerians to give him a chance in his determined effort and promise to clean up the mess at the Nigerian Central Bank.
