Of Bar Finals, the War in Port Harcourt, the New Minister for Works and My Choir

By:
Nwanze Ngozi Lilian

My exams were fine thank you (I did not get even one fan mail to ask me why
I had not written in a while.. Is that how horrible a writer I am?)

Anyway, I have been away. Busy in my last lap at the Nigerian Law School
(There it is!  Whether you care to know or not.)

I finally concluded my Bar final examinations and I congratulate myself!  I
am grateful to God that I did not break down and my hope is in Him alone for
a good result!  (.To all you Nigerian Lawyers out there, if this is what you
went through, then I respect you big time!)

It was no easy task for me!

Rumours have it that two female bar finalists were caught carrying
"metaphysical implements" (.for those of us who are lost, JUJU.) into the
examination hall - that was how tough it was!

Anyway, ALL that is over now!  The full gist of Law School, its betrayals,
the stress, the love and all the works will form an article for another day.

I am back in Port Harcourt and I came back to meet a mini civil war!
Thankfully, I have not experienced first hand any shooting (I only hear
shots from a distance) but I have had my own fair share of the effects of
this war!

The soldiers who are to serve and protect with integrity (.or is that the
police?...) are doing just that.  They are unabashedly extorting a minimum
of 50 Nigerian Naira from every commercial vehicle and a little over double
of that from unfortunate private ones.

For those going into areas like "Mile1", your bus (or car) MUST stop, you
alight and walk about 3km with your hands high above your head.

Onyinye, a female 22year old occupant of my house (.very unlikely to be a
cultist.), was asked to roll in muddy water because she lowered her hands
just a bit.

I say, WELLDONE soldiers!  You are indeed doing a fine job!

.Last week, the new minister of works, (GOD BLESS HER) took a trip to the
east via the Lagos - Benin Road and saw what some of us have suffered for
long over 4 years.  The interesting thing was not her discovery, it was her
immediate action!  Presently, those roads are being fixed and I have heard
from my sources that they are already much better than they have ever been
in the last 3 years.
Bravo Ally Madueke!

.I  realize that if I stop here, the article will be too short for
publication so I will add one more issue for determination (.don't I just
sound so lawyerly already?...)

I confess!  I am in Church right now and while I am not receiving Holy
Communion, I should be sitting piously (like a good Catholic), staring at
the altar longingly!

Ah well!  The grumpy church warden has NOT caught me writing yet so till she
does, I will write!

I do not know if I have ever in any of my write ups mentioned that the choir
in my church is the worst in the WORLD!  If I have not, it must have been a
major oversight on my path.  Anyway, here it is: The choir in my church is
(.or was?) the worst in the world!

This is my first Sunday in  Port Harcourt since I got back from Lagos and I
cannot help but notice that the choir has improved greatly!

While they sang, I realized that NOTHING in life cannot be worked on - all
we need is a little more hard work (.the grumpy Church Warden just passed
but did not see me .the catechist is now reeling out announcements.)

.anyway, this is just to encourage anyone in need of encouragement.  If my
choir could improve, then you can!  All you need is a tiny winy bit of extra
hardwork and prayers and that's it!

Long Live the Council of Legal Education!
Long Live our Soldiers(. or extortionists?)!
Long live the Ministry of Works!
Long Live the improved voices in my Church choir!
God help us ALL!
